Technicalities (Weekend Play by Play Part III)

This is the last of my weekend play by play series, at least for this year. I'd better savor it.

Last weekend, Batch '98 closed its spirited run in the Pisay Alumni Volleyball Tournament. Batch '98 fell to a more inspired '88 team 8-25,20-25 in the Saturday game. Batch '98 ended its campaign on a positive note, demolishing '93 in straight sets 25-20,25-23. Photo coverage on the game versus '88 was c/o Jae while the game versus '93 was c/o Salve's sister.

In the first game of the weekend, the game was close at the start of the first set, with the last time happening at 6-6 (i think). But then, '88 balding tosser started making huge blocks that irritated Ontong. From that point on, there was no turning back for '88, scoring probably a dozen straight points at one time on some silly points lost at the net. Well, it was entirely our fault. There's the referee.

I failed to report this in my previous post (because I might have been mistaken for sourgraping), but the squeker game against '90 could have gone our way had it not been for the bee-yatch of a ref. She made silly calls back then (to the howling protests of Olibog; we were even reprimanded for such behavior) and she made a lot of silly calls on our game with '88. She made a lot of questionable calls included line and touching calls. Apparently, this bee-yatch is some sort of a control freak that she wants to control the game. According to Pat Castro, at the point when we were losing, she called a wide spike by Oliver "IN." That's different from the "net touching" calls she made, not to mention those "illegal rotation" calls she made. She singlehandedly took the fun out of game.

With absolutely nothing to lose, '98 marched into the second game with the intent of spoiling '93 quest for a finals slot. However, last minute ditchings by Marwin Macalanda and Emmanuel Cedric Ontong shrank the roster to five (Pat, Salve, Olibog, Caparas and me). I tried calling Karlo Castro for some help but decided not to push through with it. On the brink of being defaulted, '98 turned to '05 player Jet (he's the one you won't recognize in the pic). '93 agreed to a last minute merger with '05 and then we played.

Playing in a much more relaxed atmosphere (with nothing to lose and everything to gain) seems to have helped us a lot. Of course, our import from '05 provided us with a tosser that we have severely missed since the start of the tournament (especially when Shaty left). Everyone had a heyday hitting spikes and dropshots, but Brian probably enjoyed the most. Nung una, napilitan lang. Nang tumagal, kinareer na! We expect to see him again next year. For most part of the first set, '93 never really got their game going. It was an exciting feeling to see your opponent use up all their timeouts in a set (the shoe is in the other foot, finally!!) During the second set, it was a closer match, with '93 tasting up to a 5 point lead at a certain point. To tell you guys honestly, I was prepared to lose. I sorta got used to it. It was ok for us to lose that game since we technically should have been defaulted (score 25-0). I called a time out at 23-20 and asked the team what do they plan to do about the game, realizing its consequences on '93 and their "showdown" with '96. Eventually, we agreed just to play the game out. '93 responded to our timeout with a 3-0 spurt but '98 scored the last two points to close out the match, the last point being the result of a block that I made.

At matchpoint, I told Oliver "Eto pala feeling ng may matchpoint."

Now, the bigger story is that after winning the game, we decided to lose it.

How the hell do you do that? Well, it's simple. Just tell the officials to consider yourself defaulted. That handed the last finals slot to '93 and pushed our record back to 0-5. Of course, I don't feel like Angola. Why? Because we won a game. A win is a win, technically speaking or not. It's funny now that I realized it, but we both lost AND won a game this tournament on account of technicalities.

Well at least, there's something to look forward to next year. Sana mag-dilang anghel si Pinlac, at baka mag-champion kami next year.

POST-SCRIPTS

1. Happy Birthday to Chewy last weekend! The food was very tasty, the place was far, and the conversation was great! It was a homecoming of sorts because nag-apparition si JR Rebugio, I mean Tadena na pala. Jae should post something about this party (with pictures and other "water under the bridge" details).

2. Next year, I hope some other volleyball players from our batch join us, particularly sina Charisse, Paulo Chua, etc.

3. I'm in the process of looking for that bee-yatch ref's name. I can probably convince the registrar to change some of her 2.5's by dropping the 2.

4. Good luck to the basketball team. Hope you have better luck than us!

5. See yah all this Sept. 4!

Comments:

Batch '98 fell to a more inspired '88 team 8-25,20-25 and

Batch '98 ... demolishing '93 in straight sets 25-20,25-23.para kang inquirer mag report.

well, bad trip talaga mga ref (and officials) for two reasons:
1. they should have at least 4 officials: 1 scorer, 1 referee, and 2 linesmen.
2. dapat mas matino yung mga numbers natin (during the game).

why? kasi we paid them to officiate for us! acdg to ma'am dacs, its all part of their costing.

mahirap nang mag post at baka ma-alienate ako. parang inquirer na nga daw ako mag report, ayoko ring mag opine na parang inquirer. :)

well, as i've said, see you next year.

Po and I are of the same opinion of the referee (yung girl): biatch sya. I have this very distinct feeling that she enjoyed being able to influence and direct the entire game all by herself, when in fact referee dapat sya (NEUTRAL dapat). She did this in two separate games, so this isn't a coincidence..

Buti pa yung lalaking referee last sunday, matino. ^_^

si po galit dun sa babaeng referee, pero gustong gusto yung lalake...

ayos ka talaga jae. hahaha. wala kang pinapalampas na pagkakataon para hiritan si po... :-)

i re-read the entire article i posted and wala namang na-mention doon about any male referee. if any, baka jae was referring to the comment of pat. maybe jae could redirect his "hirit" to pat...

nde, implied sya sa post mo po..hwehe =p
